The short version

The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 and its football programme began in 1879, making it one of the oldest in the sport. Michigan Stadium opened in 1927 and has been enlarged to hold more than 100,000 — making it the largest stadium in the United States.

The programme claims twelve national titles, spanning the 1900s through to 2023, when it won the College Football Playoff. Michigan was also the first college football programme to pass 1,000 all-time wins, reaching that mark during the 2023 championship season.

Maize and blue, unchanged for close to a century

Michigan's pairing is the oldest in college football and has barely shifted since the 1930s, which is why its retro designs look so much like its current ones.

01

Maize is used as trim against a dark navy base, and the combination has been effectively unchanged for nearly a century. The result is a range where a throwback and a current shirt can be hard to separate at a glance — the identifying details are the block number font, the shoulder yoke and the exact yellow, not the colours. With twelve claimed national titles and the largest stadium in the United States, Michigan is the programme where a colour has outlasted several conferences' realignments and several scoreboard conventions, and the merchandise has the same continuity.

02

The number culture is a proud small-number one. Michigan has retired only a handful of numbers, and #98 is the best known — worn by one of the sport's greatest players and then kept out of circulation in his honour, while the programme's win-total tradition also orbits 98. A smaller famous number belongs to an earlier era and still turns up on retro designs. In a sport where numbers are recycled without ceremony, having a handful that are genuinely out of play is unusual, and it is why a Michigan shirt is more often chosen by the number than by the design.

The story so far

The 2025 season produced a 9-4 record and a place just outside the final top twenty of the AP poll, in a year of transition for the programme.

We list 156 Michigan items, with youth cuts and college-edition adult pieces the two biggest blocks, and an unusually strong women's presence for a college range. Live examples: “Youth(Kids) Michigan Wolverines #98 Devin Gardner White Jersey”; “Youth(Kids) Michigan Wolverines #77 Taylor Lewan White Jersey”; “Youth(Kids) Michigan Wolverines #5 John Wangler White Jersey”.

School colour and crest on the standard supporter cut.

Alumni / Retro

Throwback designs tied to championship seasons and classic uniforms.

Youth

Sized by age rather than chest, in the same designs as the adult range.

Sizes and who they are for

How the cuts fit in practice, and what to do when you are on the boundary.

True to size

Most listings run true to size with an athletic cut. If you wear a medium tee, a medium jersey is the usual call.

Between sizes?

Size up for a looser match-day fit, or stay down for a closer cut under a hoodie.

Youth & women's

Both are carried in selected editions and sized on their own charts — the listing page shows the break.

Care guide

Five minutes of care keeps a printed or stitched shirt looking new for years. These are the steps that actually matter — the rest is optional.

StepWhat to doWhy it matters
1 · WashTurn the shirt inside out and wash cold, on a normal or gentle cycle, with a mild detergent. Wash it with other darks.Heat and detergent are what break down screen-printed ink and loosen heat-bonded numbers. Inside-out protects the graphic from abrasion.
2 · No bleach, no softenerSkip chlorine bleach and fabric softener. If a shirt needs brightening, use an oxygen-based cleaner and check the care label first.Softener leaves a film on the print that traps dirt, and bleach will fade the colours and eat into stitching over time.
3 · Dry low or air dryAir dry flat or on a hanger. If you have to use a dryer, use low heat for a short cycle and take it out while slightly damp.High tumble heat is the single biggest cause of shrinking and warped twill numbers. Drying damp and shaping by hand avoids both.
4 · Iron inside outIron the shirt inside out on a low setting, or press a cloth over the graphic. Never iron directly onto a number, name or crest.Direct heat and steam lift the edge of a print and can melt heat-bonded lettering. Inside out puts the heat on the fabric, not the graphic.
5 · Store it properlyFold or hang in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not leave a shirt in a car or an attic over a season.Sunlight fades colours unevenly and heat in a parked car or loft will yellow the fabric. A dark, dry storage spot is the whole job.
